Ways of Seeing - Chapter.01

A discussion on ways of seeing, and the relationship between language and images.

Reflections on originality, reproduction, and accessibility in art.

Key Notes

1️⃣  Ways of Seeing & the Gaze of Others

  • The way we see art isn’t completely personal — it’s shaped by art history, critics, and cultural norms.
  • We’re always aware of how others might see us, and that affects how we present ourselves (like on social media or in different spaces).

2️⃣  Accessibility and Art

  • Art is still often seen as something for a limited, “elite” group.
  • Postmodernism tried to make art more accessible, but sometimes ended up making it even harder to understand.
  • Museums and public spaces should feel more open and easier for everyone to engage with.

3️⃣  Original vs Reproduction

  • With reproduction technologies, it’s harder to keep the “aura” of the original.
  • But reproduction isn’t just a bad thing — it can give new meaning to artworks.
  • It also makes art more accessible in everyday life.

4️⃣ The Role of the Artist Today

  • In the past, critics explained artworks.
  • Now, artists are expected to explain their own work and ideas.
  • Artists have more control over how their work is shown and understood.

5️⃣ Curation and Exhibitions

  • Curators shape meaning by choosing and arranging works — almost like artists.
  • A good exhibition is not just about the works, but how people experience them.
  • Space, flow, and audience experience all matter.
